Kidney Stones

Kidney stones, medically known as renal calculi, are solid deposits of minerals and salts that form inside the kidneys. These stones can vary in size, ranging from tiny particles to larger formations that can cause significant pain and discomfort. At Family Care Health Center, we specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of kidney stones to alleviate symptoms and prevent recurrence.

Causes of Kidney Stones: Kidney stones develop when certain substances in urine, such as calcium, oxalate, and uric acid, become highly concentrated and crystallize. Several factors contribute to stone formation:

  • Dehydration: Reduced fluid intake can lead to concentrated urine, increasing the risk of stone formation.
  • Dietary Factors: High intake of oxalate-rich foods (such as spinach and nuts) or sodium can contribute to stone formation.
  • Medical Conditions: Such as hyperparathyroidism, gout, or urinary tract infections that alter urine composition.
  • Family History: Genetic factors may predispose individuals to kidney stone formation.

Symptoms of Kidney Stones: The presence and size of kidney stones determine symptoms, which may include:

  • Severe Pain: Intense pain in the side or back, below the ribs, that radiates to the lower abdomen and groin.
  • Painful Urination: Discomfort or pain while urinating, often accompanied by urgency.
  • Blood in Urine: Pink, red, or brown urine due to blood from kidney stones irritating the urinary tract.
  • Nausea and Vomiting: Especially when accompanied by severe pain.
  • Frequent Urination: Needing to urinate more often than usual.
